Building Anxiety

Commissioned by musician, writer and anti-gentrification activist Massih Hutak (Verdedig Noord) for a text and soundtrack he wrote. The text evokes feelings of fear and alienation in light of new real estate developments – from the perspective of a long-time resident of the rapidly gentrifying neighbourhood Amsterdam-Noord. We hoped to channel the sense of a creeping threat, as well as to capture new high-rise architecture as these vast, expanding, financialised and inhuman landscapes and patterns. At the same time, a sense of community – while under pressure – provides something hopeful to grab onto.
